Abstract

This study aims to highlight the importance of practising school sport in primary education and its role in selecting and guiding young pupils through curricular and extracurricular activities under the supervision of a specialist subject teacher. The study was conducted in a sample of primary schools in Ouargla Province comprising 120 male and female pupils supervised by 30 primary-school physical education teachers. The sample was selected purposively from pupils participating in school sports competitions. The researchers adopted the descriptive approach as appropriate to the study. The main research question was whether the physical education and sport teacher plays a role in selection and guidance towards school sport. The study concluded that the presence of a specialist teacher has a positive role in selection, guidance and the practice of school sporting activities.
