The Central Maghreb attained a prominent civilizational standing, aided by its strategic geographical location. This position had a positive impact on various aspects of life in the region, especially maritime trade. Its extensive coastline contributed to the emergence of several ports. These ports played important roles and enhanced the commercial and civilizational value of the Central Maghreb during the medieval period. The true significance of this important historical feature is closely linked to the establishment of these ports in coastal cities, from which they usually took their names. The ports of Béjaïa and Oran, which are the subject of this study, were among the largest ports of the Central Maghreb in both size and activity during those periods. They possessed natural and human assets that enabled them to play a significant civilizational role in the Mediterranean world.
